Upside Down Tomato Information

Growing The Upside Down Tomato

These are my spring 2006 tomatoes. They aren't very big in this photo but you get the general idea.

You remove the center circle from the bottom of a standard hanging basket. Carefully feed the tomato up threw the bottom. They are flexible if you go slowly and carefully you will loose little to no leaves. Then fill the pot with dirt to keep the tomato steady and straight in the bottom.

I usually then take some petunia plants to fill in the top, four small plants is more than enough, but you can add more or less.

Tomato Care

I have had wonderful luck with these. Be on the look out for Tomato Bugs and lack of water. These were my only problems.

I usually liquid miracle grow every couple months.

This is an awesome way to get fresh tomatoes if you live in an apartment or have no yard. Plus you never have to stake these plants, gravity does all your work for you.

I have also grown them with herbs on top, like oregano or basil.....they go well together and are very usable together.

Don't Forget the Water

These plants especially in the heat of summer will require alot of water. It will depend upon you and your location. Remember tomatoes like the hot sun.

Visit your local nursery
Your local nursery is a great source of plant information. It is also a great place to experiment with other types of tomatoes. I have used celebrity, big boy and cherry tomatoes in my baskets.
